  3. that used for an experiment on 
  4. lightness constancy. The 
  5. observer must match a standard 
  6. gray square on one side with a 
  7. comparison square on the other 
  8. side in a very different 
  9. illumination. The match is 
  10. usually to the shade of gray of 
  11. the standard.

  13.     Most students of perception 
  14. believe that the relational 
  15. explanation of perceived 
  16. lightness, lightness constancy, 
  17. and contrast is essentially 
  18. correct. From the discussion so 
  19. far, it appears that the problem 
  20. of lightness constancy is much 
  21. better dealt with by a theory 
  22. based on stimulus relations 
  23. than by a taking-into-account 
  24. type of theory, although, as we 
  25. shall see, there is more to 
  26. lightness constancy than 
  27. stimulus ratios.
